In the Norse myths, Freyja’s grief does not disappear quietly. When her husband Óðr goes wandering, she searches for him, weeping tears that become gold when they fall upon the earth and amber when they touch the sea.
It is a striking image of sorrow, but not one of weakness. Freyja’s longing moves through the world and changes what it touches. Her beauty is not separate from her anguish, nor is her sensuality a denial of grief. Both belong to the same powerful, searching woman.
Perhaps this windswept Freyja stands at that threshold between loss and transformation, where the heart keeps moving even when it cannot yet find what it seeks. Some tears leave the body as water. Others become something the world remembers.
